Is Your Commercial Vehicle Insured On Your Personal Auto Policy?Business owners quite frequently tell me that the car, van, or pick up they use in their business is insured along with their other privately owned vehicles. They say that their insurance agent tells them that’s OK. Any vehicle that is used primarily in the operation of a business is a commercial vehicle.

Whether you are transporting people, delivering packages, going to a residence or business for the purpose of selling or demonstrating a product or service, or hauling materials to a jobsite, you are driving a commercial vehicle.

You may have had your “business” vehicle insured on your personal auto insurance policy for years and everything has been just fine, but what do you think would happen if you were involved in an accident and seriously injured four of your passengers? Once your insurance company determines that your vehicle was being used for business purposes at the time of the accident, you could have some very serious problems. It could go as far as having your claim denied and the lawsuits could be staggering.

One of the questions normally asked on the personal auto insurance application is - “Do you use this vehicle for business purposes?”

There are auto insurance companies that will allow you to rate a vehicle for “business use” on the same insurance policy as your private vehicles, but why not make a clear-cut distinction between your private autos and your “commercial” vehicles? This could eliminate confusion and misunderstandings later.
